LEAGUE HANDBOOK, RULES

Spoga Fitness Center is striving to provide a professional basketball environment and organized structure for our players. Our league rules, regulations and policies were constructed with those intentions.

Spoga Fitness Center gymnasium rules:
  • Hanging on rims is strictly prohibited. In league play, this will result in an immediate technical foul + possession.
  • No food is allowed inside court area.
  • Shirts/jerseys must be worn at all times.
  • Closed-toe shoes are required inside the gym.
  • Youth under 12 years old must be accompanied by parent, guardian or supervisor.
  • Fighting, abusive/provoking language, property damage (hanging on rims), court damage, loitering, disorderly conduct, littering and horseplay are not permitted and will result in suspension, expulsion or termination of membership and/or use of the facility is strongly enforced.
  • Upon registration, all players must sign liability waiver for personal injury, property damage.
  • League and gymnasium rules are strictly enforced.
    • For discipline, damages, forfeiture, postponement and more specific league rules and regulations, please read the handbook below.
  • All players in Spoga Fitness Center's 4-on-4 league consent, agree and adhere to the league's handbook.

NCAA RULES APPLY

Spoga Fitness Center and the league's official(s) will adhere to the NCAA's in-game rules and regulations. Exception: Spoga Fitness Center will allow six fouls to be committed per player. Following a sixth foul committed, a player will then be disqualified.

GAME STRUCTURE

Each game will feature two 20-minute halves (running clock), a 5-minute halftime and a 10-minute shootaround/warmup beforehand. If the game is within 20 points in the final 2:00 minutes of the second half, the clock will then stop after any made basket, dead ball, foul or at any point at the individual discretion of the official(s). If one team holds a 20-point lead with 2:00 minutes remaining in the second half, the game will then be deemed complete, or completed via “mercy rule.”
The official(s) may, in his/her discretion, stop the clock at any point if a player is in need of injury/medical attention or if play is interrupted. If play is interrupted by one player, the game official(s) has full discretion to discipline specific players at any moment.

OVERTIME

In the event of a tied game after the second half is completed, an overtime period of 3:00 minutes shall be played. The clock will stop in the final 2:00 minutes of the first overtime. Additional overtime periods of 2:00 minutes (second OT) and 1:00 minute (third OT) will follow if the score remains tied after the first and/or second overtime period(s). Should the score remain tied after all three overtimes, a tie will be given to each team as a result.
Each team will be given one timeout for the first overtime. No timeouts will be allowed by either team in the second or third overtime period(s). The clock will stop in the second and third overtime period(s).

GAME BALL

A game ball will be provided by Spoga Fitness Center, but players are welcome to provide their own ball for shootaround and warm-ups.

FORFEIT

For a game to begin, each team must have at least four players present. If one team does not meet the requisite amount of players for a specific game, the official(s) must not begin the game. If a team is unable to provide four players 10 minutes after the previously scheduled tipoff time, the team without the requisite amount of players will be charged with a forfeit and a loss. If both teams provide fewer than four players to the same game, the official(s) will charge a double-forfeit, assessing one loss to each team. The game(s) will not be rescheduled following any of the above instances.
If a team knows it must forfeit in advance of a game, it is strongly encouraged the team shall notify Spoga Fitness Center at least 60 minutes before tipoff.

FOULS, FREE THROWS

A player will be disqualified upon committing a sixth foul of any type, or his second technical foul. Any flagrant or unsportsmanlike fouls shall result in two free throws and a loss of possession. At the discretion of the official(s), a player may be automatically ejected from play after committing a flagrant or unsportsmanlike foul. The ejected player must then leave the vicinity of the gymnasium. Failure to do so will automatically charge his team with a forfeit. All play and the game then will no longer continue.
Should a player, or players, be disqualified on fouls, a game can continue with one team having as few as three eligible players. Providing fewer than three eligible players at any point in the game will result in a forfeit for the team at fault.

1-and-1 FREE THROWS | 1-and-1 free throws will be applied only under 2:00 remaining in the second half AND after a team has committed seven team fouls.

TIMEOUTS

Each team will be allotted three timeouts per half. Timeouts do not roll over from half to half. In overtime, each team will be given one timeout per overtime period.

POSTPONEMENT, SCHEDULING

Spoga Fitness Center and/or the game official(s) are solely permitted to change game times or game dates. No game time change requests will be accepted. Scheduling for Spoga Fitness Center's basketball leagues are done by random selection prior to schedule generation.

Exception: In instances where court time is affected because of unforeseen circumstances not in control of the league (activities running late on the gym floor, inclement weather, lighting or structural problems in the gymnasium) Spoga Fitness Center and/or the game official(s) shall notify each team/team captain about a possible rescheduling or game cancellation as soon as possible. In such an instance, as soon as possible shortly thereafter, each team captain will be informed of a rescheduled date and time.

DISCIPLINE, DAMAGES

Game officials(s), under their total discretion, have the authority to discipline players in-game for violations of any kind under Spoga Fitness Center’s 4-on-4 men’s basketball league rules and regulations and gymnasium rules.
  • Hanging on the rims is strictly prohibited and each instance will result in a technical foul.
  • Abusive language and/or speech instigating or prompting a verbal and/or physical altercation is strictly prohibited and will result in suspension from play and/or expulsion from league.
  • Abusive language and/or cursing directed at any and all officials will immediately result in an ejection.
  • Players ejected from games will be contacted by Spoga Fitness Center in subsequent days to assign appropriate discipline following review of the reason(s) for ejection. If a player’s behavior constantly causes a hostile game environment, the player will be expelled from the league and prohibited to return at any point.
  • All players acknowledge liability for damage to equipment, furnishings, and any other property of Spoga Fitness Center, excluding damage due to normal wear and tear. All players agree to pay the cost to repair or replace the damaged property, at Spoga Fitness Center’s discretion.
  • Should equipment be damaged to an unrecoverable state, forcing the league’s remaining games be cancelled, the player(s) responsible for damages agree to pay in full for any and all repairs, loss of value, loss of property value, diminution of gymnasium value and diminution of value to Spoga Fitness Center.
  • If a player is solely, directly and objectively responsible for creating a hole in the wall during play, the player will be charged a $75 damage fee. For example, if a player throws a ball at a gymnasium wall because of in-game frustration, damage is produced and hole is created, the player will be charged $75. If a player is responsible for interior damages other than creating a hole in the wall (Included, but not limited to, examples: damaging a light or light protection structure or damaging other gymnasium equipment) the player will be charged an appropriate damage fee once damages and the method of damage have been reviewed and assessed by Spoga Fitness Center for those instances.
